Fort James is the oldest fort in Tobago, having been established in the 1760s. Located in Plymouth overlooking Great Courland Bay, the fort was originally a British guard house and barracks. Remnants of the original structures are still on the site. These artifacts include a powder magazine, a brick oven, walls made of coral and limestone, and a number of cannons. Today, Fort James is maintained by the Tobago Tourist Bureau. One building that was originally part of the fort complex has been restored and made into the Tobago School for the Deaf.
